If you live in Houston, you are in luck, because the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, is presenting the unmissable exhibit The Glamour and Romance of Oscar de la Renta, and once you see it, you will understand why it is described as a true celebration of the illustrious life and career of the renowned fashion designer.
The exhibition, which showcases nearly 70 ensembles, offers a breathtaking look into de la Renta’s truly unique talent for detail and elegance. You will find yourself fascinated at the exquisitely embellished sleeves, incredibly knotted bows and perfectly placed embroideries. Each one of his touches elevated the outfit to the highest level of glamour. Even the seams resemble a work of art: the way they follow the mannequins’ contour makes you believe that every design’s owner was de la Renta’s most inspiring muse.
Speaking of muses, the Dominican-born designer admitted to have a favorite: his wife Annette. Every design that he conceived, he would bring to life only if he thought his wife would wear it. But make no mistake, his designs are so timeless, that they would appeal to women of all ages and aspects of life, from Taylor Swift and Penelope Cruz, to First Lady Laura Bush and our very own Texan legend Lynn Wyatt.
If you love fashion, please do yourself a favor and RUN to this exhibit. You will leave inspired and, as exhibit curator and fashion icon André Leon Talley put it, “with a sense of his passion for romantic embellishment, exuberance of color, deft and intricate textiles to convey opulence, and a sense of a firm foundation based on the rigors of fine tailoring and technique”.
